1. Plan in advance to get a good dealSince most fares on scheduled carriers have advance purchase requirements, the best fares exist more than 21 days before your travel date. However, if this is too soon, book your ticket at least 14 days in advance to get the best deal. 2. Be flexible – try different days and timesA slight change in your itinerary can reduce ticket prices. Fares are typically lower on low demand days and times, which are Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday, and late-evenings. Not only will you save you a lot, but you may also end up with the entire row to yourself! 3. Find cheaper flights by using nearby airportsTypically, nearby airports have lower gate fees, and airlines pass the savings on to you. Moreover, these airports can be less crowded and easier to get in and out of. 4. Book Return TicketsA return flight is often priced less than two one-way trips and is sometimes priced less than a one-way trip. Unless you’re certain you’re not coming back, book a return flight. 5. Stay over a Saturday nightSometimes a lower fare is available if you stay over on a Saturday night. An extra night at your in-laws' house may raise your blood pressure, but will likely lower your fare. 6. Book holiday trips very earlyPublic & school holidays are the highest-demand travel periods. Have you been in an airport the day before Christmas or tried to book a Bank Holiday break at the last-minute? Early planning improves your chance of finding the lowest fare or rate. 7. Search for air and hotel rates togetherBooking a trip as a package makes searching easier and is often much cheaper than buying the components of the trip separately. Airlines and hotels will discount more if they can bury the reduced rates in a package. 8. If you see a great fare, book it before someone else doesWhen searching online, fares and holiday prices may change minute by minute. If you see a fare or holiday you like, book it because it might not be there two minutes later. 9. Connections - The good, the bad and the uglyFlight with connections are usually cheaper than direct flights. Some may dislike the hassle of a longer trip or the risk of missing a connection, but a few hours of extra travel may save you a lot. 10. Try Travelzoo's SuperSearch! |
